Direct Loan MPN – Student

All new Federal Direct Stafford and Federal Direct PLUS Loan borrowers must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) for the Direct Loan Program.

Students who need to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) will need:

  • Approximately 30 minutes to complete (MPN must be completed in a single session.)
  • Your Federal Student Aid PIN

Note: Students must sign in using their own Federal Student Aid PIN to complete Master Promissory Notes (MPNs). If you do not have a Federal Student Aid PIN, visit www.pin.ed.gov.

Reference Information for two people with different U.S. addresses who have known you for at least 3 years. The first reference should be a parent or a legal guardian.

  • Name of each reference
  • Address of each reference
  • Email address for each reference
  • Telephone number of each reference
  • Relationship of each reference to the student
If you have previously completed either a Direct Loan MPN or a Direct PLUS Loan Request, some of this information may be populated for you. You should review all populated information carefully for accuracy.
Law Students and School of Social Work Students: Select “University of Connecticut—Storrs” as your school when completing the MPN.

Federal Direct Stafford Loan (Subsidized/Unsubsidized) MPN

Complete your MPN electronically via the Department of Education’s website. Be sure to read the “What You Need” and “What to Expect” links on the left side of the page before starting.

  • Login to the MPN site using your Federal Student Aid PIN. (Don’t know your PIN? Visit the Department of Education’s PIN site.)
  • Provide all requested personal information.
  • You will receive an email confirmation for the Department of Education when you are finished.

Remember that you will still have to accept or decline your aid via the Student Administration System once awards are sent to students via email.

Note: If you are a first time borrower at UConn, you must also complete Entrance Counseling.


Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan MPN

Important Note for Graduate PLUS Borrowers

Before completing the Federal DirectGraduate PLUS Loan MPN, you must:

  1. File a FAFSA.
  2. Accept or decline any aid you were offered.
  3. Complete an online application via http://studentloans.gov and be credit approved.

You should only complete the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan MPN if you have been credit approved for this loan.


Complete your MPN electronically via the Department of Education’s website.

  • Login to the MPN site using your Federal Student Aid PIN.
  • Provide all requested personal information.
  • You will receive an email confirmation from the US Department of Education once you are finished with the Federal Direct Grad PLUS Loan MPN.

Note: If you are a first time borrower at UConn, you must also complete Entrance Counseling.
